EAR NOTCHING FOR BLACK RHINOS IN TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is undertaking a black rhino ear notching exercise, fitting of horn transmitters and microchips in Tsavo East National Park as a routine management intervention in the free ranging population, as part of the implementation of the Black Rhino Recovery and Action Plan.

One more Rothschild’s giraffe has been rescued from Longicharo Island, on Lake Baringo, to the mainland, as rising water levels continue to shrink the size of the island, threatening the survival of animals. This is the 3rd after two other giraffes were rescued in December 2020, and other smaller wildlife species before that.

Two management plans have been launched to curb unplanned change of land use within Amboseli Ecosystem in Kajiado County, which is threatening the sustainability of wildlife conservation.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Hon. Najib Balala launched the Amboseli Ecosystem Management Plan alongside the Amboseli National Park Management plan at a ceremony held at the park’s Kimana gate.

AWF DONATES EQUIPMENT TO KWS FOR CANINE UNIT

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Brigadier (Rtd) John Waweru Wednesday, 2 December, 2020 received equipment worth over Kshs. 3.7 million from African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). The equipment will go towards supporting Lake Nakuru National Park’s anti-poaching tracker unit.

Earlier this year, AWF assisted KWS to build kennels, an office store, install water tanks and solar panels for the anti-poaching canine unit at the Lake Nakuru National Park.

The Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife IG (Rtd.) Joseph Boinnet launched the much-awaited Management Plan for Lake Bogoria National Reserve November 5, 2020, in Baringo County. The launch was preceded by the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Nagoya Protocol at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort in Baringo County, which commenced from 3 to 6 November.

NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK ACQUIRES TITLE DEED FOR 2000 ACRES

The government of Kenya has awarded a title deed to Nairobi National Park for the 2000 acres Government land that was formerly known as Sheep and Goat Research Facility, which is adjacent to the Park. The title was awarded by President Uhuru Kenyatta at a ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Center yesterday.

KWSTI CELEBRATES 18TH GRADUATION CEREMONY

Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute (KWSTI) marked its 18th graduation ceremony on October 26, 2020, with 332 trainees being awarded Diplomas and Certifications in seven disciplines. The ceremony was supposed to have been held in June this year but was postponed due to the outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic.

FLIPFLOPI DHOW LAUNCHED AT KWS HEADQUARTERS

A dhow christened Flipflopi was launched at KWS headquarters Tuesday, September 22, 2020 by KWS Director of Strategy and Change Mr. Edwin Wanyonyi, in collaboration with other partners.

The nine-metre dhow is the first one ever to be made entirely from 10 tonnes of plastic waste - collected during beach clean-ups along the Kenyan Coast.

The items have been purchased with support from the TUI Care Foundation and will support KWS operations in combating wildlife trafficking in the Tsavo Conservation Area (TCA).
