TAXIDERMY OF LAST MALE NORTHERN WHITE RHINO, “SUDAN” NOW ON DISPLAY AT NATIONAL MUSEUMS OF KENYA

The taxidermy of the last male Northern White Rhino (NWR) known to the world, named “Sudan” was Tuesday, March 28, 2023 officially received by the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Hon. Peninah Malonza from Czech Republic Ambassador to Kenya, HE Martin Klepteko and displayed for public viewing at the National Museums of Kenya headquarters in Nairobi.

RHINO EAR NOTCHING AND TRANSMITTERS FITTING

Rhino conservation in Kenya got a major boost from the just concluded rhino ear notching and transmitters fitting exercise that took place at Lewa Borana conservancy.

The exercise undertaken by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Veterinary and Capture team led by Dr. Isaac Lekolool was done in collaboration with the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) and Lewa Borana Wildlife Conservancy.

This morning, Kenya Wildlife Service Ag. Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga hosted Mama Sarah, mother to HE President Dr. William Ruto at Nairobi National Park. During her excursion, Mama Sarah was thrilled to spot and snap a variety of wildlife against the background of Nairobi City.

She applauded the state of the roads in the park and noted how easy and affordable it is to access the national park.

Kenya joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Wildlife Day (WWD) under the theme “Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation”. During its 68th session in 2013, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3rd March as a UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.

RHINO EAR NOTCHING

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is currently undertaking a rhino ear notching exercise at Olpejeta Conservancy.

The exercise is being done in collaboration with Olpejeta Conservancy and other conservation partners, spearheaded by the KWS Veterinary and Capture teams led by Dr. Isaac Lekolool.

29 black and 15 white rhinos are designated for ear notching. The exercise involves immobilizing a rhino and making permanent marks in the form of cuts on the large mammals’ ears.

KWS PILOTS’ FLIGHT SAFETY AND PROFICIENCY TRAINING, 2023

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Acting Director General, Dr. Erustus Kanga, officially opened the biennial pilot proficiency training for the Service Airwing at Kilanguni Serena Lodge in Tsavo West National Park on February 13, 2023. During the one week training, pilots learnt from international experts drawn from the US, led by world-renowned aerobatic champion Patty Wagstaff, Captain Jeffery Rochelle, and Captain Pete Scott Muntean.
